- XXIX - A la virtud que alcanza lo dificultoso

Este cetro que ves, ¡oh pecho ardiente!,
por oro o majestad, de roble ha sido
piel; este imperio un tiempo lo ha vestido,
que apenas viste ya el dorado Oriente.
Roble o cero duro, aquesta gente
cargó el hombro, que ultraja, ya en bruñido
acero el claro sol recién nacido,
sombrero tosco la dorada frente.
Virtud, osar, valor, los ha encumbrado
a que beses su planta, blanca luna:
que fue de su virtud hija su suerte.
Hijos de un monte fueron, fue su cuna.
Mídete en ellos, pecho, pues te han dado
espejo en sí, y róbate a la muerte.
