- XIX - Al sepulcro de un varón ilustre

Blandamente en los mármoles reposa
quien ves, ¡oh caminante!, adormecido,
no muerto, que la muerte no ha podido
en él, bien que soberbia y poderosa.

No pidas triste, no, con voz llorosa,
poco peso a la tierra, la ha vestido
cual fuerte vencedor, cual de vencido
despojo; antes le es carga victoriosa.

Si llorares su muerte, no, que al cielo
vencedor vive; mil desdichas siente
en ésta, en nombre tuyo y de la tierra.

Haz compañía en esto, triste, al suelo,
y luego de tus ojos la corriente
trueca, en respeto al mármol que lo encierra.
