Presenta ufano a César victorioso
el tirano de Menfis inclemente
la temida cabeza, que al Oriente
tuvo al son de las armas temeroso.
No pudo dar el corazón piadoso
enjutos ojos, ni serena frente
al don funesto; mas gimió impaciente
de tal crueldad, y repitió lloroso:
«Tú, gran Pompeyo, en la fatal caída
serás ejemplo de la humana gloria;
y cierto aviso de su fin incierto.
¡Cuánto se debe a tu virtud crecida!
¡Cuán costoso en tu muerte es mi victoria!
Vivo te aborrecí, te lloro muerto».
