«Bien que sagrado incienso, bien que puede
vencer ardiente víctima tu saña,
esta corriente que tus basas baña,
lloroso soy, que en calidad le excede.
Este tierno pesar tu reino herede,
por culpa, ¡oh tiempo!, contra ti tamaña:
baste, pues, ya mi mal me desengaña,
a que de él limpio y de su culpa quede».
Esto, tierno, lloré, y mi tierno acento
apenas alcanzó el divino oído,
cuando en brazos oí del manso viento:
«El poder restaurarte, ¡oh ya vencido
Fabio del tiempo, y de mi tiempo exento!,
será no perder más que lo perdido».
