Quien ama y a su Amor no está presente,
mal podrá tolerar tan triste vida,
mal; porque siendo tan mortal la herida
la muerte alivia, y el dolor se siente.
Si ausentarse es morir, forzosamente
ausentándome he sido mi homicida;
pues quien no morirá que se despida,
si nadie vive con el alma ausente.
Muere la vida a manos de la ausencia
de muerte natural, y el sentimiento
se sustenta de amante inteligencia.
Y no puede morir, porque el tormento
en la parte mortal hace asistencia,
la vida sí, que no está en su elemento.
