A Fabio contra Aníbal Africano

Mientras quede Cartago las banderas
triunfar intentan del valor romano,
y espera victorioso el africano
pisar del vago Tiber las riberas;
tú, grande dictador, entre las fieras
trompas, con lento pie y segura mano,
sin sangre alguna derribaste el vano
orgullo de las armas extranjeras.
No te venció de la opinión contraria
el opuesto rumor a tu alabanza:
que fácilmente lo desprecia el sabio.
¡Oh prudente esperar, oh voluntaria
constancia, por quien Roma ver alcanza
a Aníbal roto y vencedor a Fabio!
