Ya el joven fuerte que con muestra hermosa
y con doradas armas refulgente,
librar intenta la romana gente
de la profunda sima peligrosa;

abrevia la carrera presurosa,
que no sufre tardanza el impaciente
amor de gloria, y con alegre frente
se arroja en la caverna prodigiosa.

¡Dichoso tú! que contra infaustos hados
tantas vidas comprando con la muerte,
no recibió tu pensamiento engaño.

Yo, que en más hondo abismo de cuidados
me arrojé, ¿qué esperar podré en mi suerte,
si a nadie causó bien mi mortal daño?
